The saga continues [Feb. 26th, 2010|11:37 pm]

To Arterich: It's a desktop PC - custom-built - so I didn't think the other store-bought HP computers in the house would come with a seperate graphics card (I think they do but I doubt my sister would've been willing to pull hers out to test it).

So it failed to boot on that Sunday and got stuck in a loop. Finally ran checkdisk and corrected the booting problem. Bought the replacement card this week and it seems to be working. Haven't put it through the wringer yet - I think a 3-hour skirmish in Supreme Commander will be a good test...

But Firefox died for some insane reason. You click the icon, the hourglass shows up for half a second and then the computer shrugs and doesn't do anything. The Mozilla folder where my bookmarks were said to reside has mysteriously vanished into thin air. A search turned up nothing. An attempt to create a new folder with the same name in the same location yielded the message that the folder already existed (EXCEPT IT'S INVISIBLE!). Attempts to re-install Firefox failed. Sister is recommending re-installing Windows to fix anything that got corrupted during the booting issue.

I'm feeling strangely vulnerable and bereft without my adblock and bookmarks.

And my mouse's right button died. Between the snow, the computer, and work it's a wonder I haven't made it to cable news for having gone on a killing spree...

To Tenchi: I read mostly. A friend lent me his copy of His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, etc.) and I've been slowly working my way through it but I'm not loving the characters...

I think my video card is dying. I already lost one of the card's two ports and the monitor. The monitor's replacement is hooked up to the second port and it's lost the signal twice already in the past two days, forcing me to shutdown manually. It fails to boot on the first try but works on the second. I'm going to stay away from games and see what happens since all the flare-ups occurred while I was playing a game or shortly thereafter. The worst part is it's snowing and they're saying things like "30 inches of snow" and "apocalypse" so if it dies completely, I'm going to have a few sharp words for whichever deity thought this up...

Commen sense is quite uncommon these days [Oct. 16th, 2009|10:46 pm]

A friend of the family just came back from a trip to Russia. She said the weather there was similar to home: drizzling but colder. They ran into a gentleman (from the US as well) traveling by himself who hadn't had the sense to bring a coat. TO. RUSSIA. This is not the Caribbean, m'dear. And international weather reports do exist, contrary to whatever you've been told.

I really hope the sun comes out soon. This wretched drizzle is annoying.

Renn Fest Fun [Sep. 1st, 2009|09:18 pm]

[Current Music |"Ulduar" by Cranius and Summergale]

Me, Wolf and Cap'n hit the local Renn Fest last Sunday. We got to see the Mediaeval Baebes perform. That was great! They did mostly songs from their new album Illumination which sound different from their older stuff. It's less ethereal and more earthy with a hefty helping of drums. And the drummer was totally into it. I'm a sucker for percussion so I was in love.

But I forgot my camera, a hat, and sunblock. Luckily no one burned!

I bought a red shimmery skirt with ruffles on the bottom from the Moresca shop to match the red brocade pirate bodice (J31 on the swatches page for the curious) and black shirt I had bought there a couple of years ago. The skirt's really more of an underskirt I suspect so I may need to find something else eventually to put on top but it'll do as it is for now. Problem is I'm short and I don't want to be dragging skirts through the mud so I had to reject a bunch based on length. The gypsy skirts weighed a metric fuckton.

Cap'n got himself a nice green jerkin since everything he owns is black. We're planning to go back at the end of the season in full garb when it's hopefully cooler. Wolf has no garb to speak of so we'll need to remedy that. I'll have to lace myself up and take a pic or two.

Still working as a desk monkey. Still not back into art yet but I'm hoping that will change. Have to finish cleaning - a clean room might get the creative juices flowing again. We did get new windows installed so I'm hoping our heating cost will be lower this winter. The family and dogs are the same as ever. Wolf and I will be hitting the beach in a couple of weeks so we'll see if things will go more smoothly this time. We've been watching Babylon 5 - just finished the 4th season. It is made of awesome with a side of more awesome. Nothing else to really report.

Some more updates on life [Mar. 21st, 2009|03:10 pm]

[Current Mood |annoyedannoyed]
[Current Music |"Wounded Warsong" - Silent Hill 4]

I have had a tickle in my throat for the past two weeks that has left me unable to carry out a conversation of any length without coughing in some way. I have no idea what's causing it. Glee.

We survived the trip to Kentucky for the wedding. There was some snow and wind that made things bad for a while. Chester, Captain English's valiant little Subaru Outback, got us home in one piece though. The journey probably deserves its own entry at some point.

But this trip proved to me the sheer awesomeness of GPS. I think I will be purchasing my own unit before I make any road trips. I had never seen one at work but boy, are they handy. Not perfect but better than driving around blindly as is my usual wont. Captain chose a female voice for our return trip that sounded like an amused kindergarten teacher patronizing her slightly mentally-challenged charges.

I saw Watchmen. It's terribly violent and dark and I loved it. The slow-motion sex scene made me squirm though and not in a good way. The director did the same for 300. Seriously, I feel like I'm intruding on a personal moment, especially when it gets dragged out like that. Wolf and I discussed whether Dr. Manhattan was circumcised or not. In truth, I couldn't really tell. It's a digital penis after all.

So I'm getting hooked on Avatar: The Last Airbender. It seems to have the right balance of humor with serious story-telling. Plot, it has plot, I tell you! But I'm not thrilled with their casting choices for the live-action movie.

Warning, minor rant up ahead.

First of all, live-action adaptations of cartoons never seem to work to my mind. Secondly, it's a cartoon set in an Asian-inspired world so anyone that isn't Asian would probably stick out like a sore thumb a-la boy hero in Forbidden Kingdom. He was the outsider and you knew it. So Dev Patel replaced Jesse McCartney as Prince Zuko? Is the Fire Nation the new India? Is the rest of the family going to be Indian so poor Dev doesn't look like he was adopted? I'm not sure that's really an improvement.

I saw the same thing happen with the miniseries Earthsea which was supposed to have been based on Ursula K. LeGuinn's popular books. The problem was her world is populated by people with red-brown to black skin and the evil invaders are white. She made it that way on purpose because it was social commentary along with fantasy story-telling. Hello! But they had to cast the main character and his friend as blond hobbit rip-offs. Everything relating to the story and characters were thrown out the window - the only thing kept was the name. And it didn't even look like that good a story on its own anyway. Blah.

Musings on Music Videos [Mar. 1st, 2009|11:07 pm]

[Current Location |In front of my PC as usual - silly LJ]
[Current Mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]
[Current Music |Cadence of Her Last Breath by Nightwish]

I recently got the boxed set of Trinity Blood and I'm itching to rip the DVDs and make an Abel video set to Nightwish's Amaranth . . . just like 50 other people already did. Except I don't quite know how to do that at this point. Problem is I'm insanely picky when I watch music videos. Things that annoy me:

Re-using footage
Unless you're doing a video along the lines of the El Hazard "Hubba Hubba Zoot Zoot" one where the character looks like he's singing the song, I shouldn't be seeing the same scenes over again. If you don't have enough footage on that character/event, then choose something different or a shorter song. Okay, some can pull it off but when you start looping the entire reel of footage from the beginning of the video at the end, you need to be shot for pure laziness at that point.

Subtitles
Gawds, I hate seeing random subtitles pop up. If that's all you have to work with, fine but it still annoys the heck out of me. It's distracting and looks cheap. The days of "All I could afford were VHS fansubs!" are long gone at this point, I think.

Layering
Yeah, it's real cool how you can put one scene on top of another but when your entire video consists of that, it gets real confusing real fast. And if you compress it too much, it turns into soup.

Scene changing effects
Some is okay but when every change involves the frames swooping in or dissolving into pieces or whatever, it looks like someone went crazy with a PowerPoint presentation. Not cool.

Bad pacing
If you have a fast-paced song, you need to switch scenes more often in time to the beat or choose ones with lots of action. I can't stand fast songs with really slow things happening. Or there's a crescendo and nothing happens in the video! All this dramatic music and the main character is just chilling there having this two minute conversation with someone else.

Anyone have anything to add?
By the way, this isn't an attack on anyone in particular - just things I've noticed over the years.

Yes, I'm all right. Been laying low and-
What the HELL happened to my Mr. Tumnus userpic?! Seriously, who is this guy and what did he do with Mr. Tumnus?! Oh noes - I've been hacked! D:

Anyway, yes, I'm alive.

Lessee, since my last update...

Wolf and I had the shittiest vacation at Ocean City. I did start to write up all the ghastly details but it's too much - I'm having flashbacks. Oh, there were some good things like rediscovering skeet ball, winning a leopard plushie, and riding the ferris wheel in a lightning storm.

What? Why are you looking at me like that?

And then there were the bad things like getting locked out of our room, coming down with some sort of stomach bug, Wolf having problems sleeping, and the ocean not smelling as salty as I recall the ocean smelling in my youth. Wolf said Ocean City never smelled salty. I have to take his word for it because I had never been there before. I want to go back to Myrtle Beach...

What else? I sorta kinda didn't get promoted at work. I'm still an admin but with more room for growth or so they say. The new boss is very laid back and says I could go into research when my stint as desk monkey ends. Not sure that I'm research material though. I mean, I got an art degree because it was the only thing I was good at! I took math for stupid people, geez!

Speaking of which, I did post a crappy drawing on my dA account. I have my dA page as my website now since chibikaki.com is gone. I have a flat-screen monitor so I'm not sure how the colors came out. Anyway, I'm hoping to get back into art as time goes on. I did end up buying the new Adobe Creative Suite 4 with some of my hard-earned cash as a Christmas present to myself. Now I want to get the latest Painter but we'll see. I'm working on another pic as I speak.

The dogs continue being good at what they do - mainly being dogs.
Onyx is getting old, poor baby - she's 10. She's got a gimpy leg and Wolf glares at me for neglecting to take her to the vet to have them look at it. She may have a bad leg but she can still murder vets at an astonishing speed that would put a younger dog to shame. I see no reason to hasten their demise when her yearly growling and voiding-of-all-orifices-on-the-exam-room-floor fest is approaching anyway.

Shadow is currently 5 and is still a very bad and mischievous dog. He's not showing any of the maturity Onyx displayed at his age and is permanently stuck in the dog-equivalent of the terrible twos. But they have totally different personalities, to be honest. Onyx has always been rather serious and not easily amused. Shadow is all about carpe diem, goddammit. On one hand, he's still very sweet and loving, but on the other hand, he may still murder you in your sleep if you look at him funny.

On the gaming front, Wolf got me Guild Wars for Christmas so I've been messing around with the classes. I joined the TF2 clan he's part of so I've got a fun group of people to play with when I'm not logging into the really busy do-or-die servers. I heart the retro art style so bad though.
Heavy + Medic = OTP!
Scout update is supposed to be coming out soon so I need to start practicing with Natasha. Though I've been doing more GW recently since it requires less thinking. I did finally play through Diablo 1 for the first time ever! I did it with the Warrior and the graphics made my eyes positively bleed. He has yellow skin. Ew. It cracks me up that I first played this game almost 10 years ago and never made it past the caves.

Now we're planning to attend a wedding later this month in ice-bound effin' Kentucky provided more of it isn't planning to fall on that weekend. Seriously, who does February weddings out there in the godless wastes of the bluegrass state?! I'm crossing my fingers because I'm in the mood for a crazy, sleep-deprived weekend road trip.

Yeah, so that's it in a nutshell. I haven't updated because I got tired of writing. There's only so much material and my life is certainly not as exciting as some. And work will suck the life out of you and a crappy vacation won't help either. Here's to hoping for good things in 2009!

Getting my butt handed to me on a silver platter [Jul. 20th, 2008|02:57 am]

[Current Music |"Ice Queen" - Within Temptation]

That's what I get for being a newbie among hardcore players in Team Fortress 2. Heavys should be equipped with rear-view mirrors. XD

Saw Hellboy 2 earlier. Damn, I fell in love with the elf guy. He's so hot in a pale sort of way. Yum yum. :q That's how I picture Rhan's fighting style once he's properly trained. Even though it took one actor and two Asian stunt doubles to bring the character to life. But I was kinda bummed when he broke out the two swords because then he turned into Albino Drizzt! Still, I was drooling all over him.

Three weeks 'til I hit the beach with Wolf. w00t! :D

*insert monty python quote regarding one's state of existence* [Jun. 13th, 2007|12:32 am]
Hevia
I would like to direct your attention, ever so briefly, to this link that I have shamelessly stolen from snarechan:
http://acatandtwenty.blogspot.com/2007/06/above-and-beyond-all-this.html

If you are too lazy to click it, it deals with women being attacked and apologizing for existing in a male society. Obviously, abuse is not limited to the so-called fairer sex but I don't think society has quite gotten past the mentality that men are better than women. Or that men don't need to apologize for their behavior around women because God didn't give them enough blood to think and have an erection at the same time. Damn you, God. It's food for thought at the very least.

Most of the time, I don't let these things get under my skin. But every now and then, I start frothing at the mouth over all the wrongs in the world. It's frustrating which is why I try to avoid getting into that state in the first place.

Anyway, I originally logged in to tell you all that I have a white nose hair.

Cheers.
